CHOOSING WOOD CLADDING
Spahaus reveals some of the best wooden cladding for your home
Showcasing your home with a stylish timber finish will add substantially to the wow factor of the building. There’s a marvellous range of wood cladding options out there to fire the imagination. We’ve put together just some of our favourites.
WESTERN RED CEDAR
The beautiful reddish brown tones of Western Red Cedar make this timber a perennial favourite with designers and architects worldwide. It’s qualities of durability, dimensional stability and it’s elegant appearance are perfectly suited to all outdoor applications where an upmarket look is required. The soft red-brown timber has a tight, straight grain and few knots. It is valued for its distinct appearance, aroma, and its high natural resistance to decay. Although light weight it is very long lasting and will provide many years of service with or without coating.
SIBERIAN LARCH
Siberian larch is denser than western red cedar, making it more resilient to knocks. It’s available in varying grades — the higher (quality) grades tend to contain fewer knots, being suitable for machined profiling, with lower grade sawn larch a cheaper option. Larch can however lose resin once installed, making it unsuitable with some finishes, and often requires pre-drilling before installation too.
HEMLOCK
Hemlock is easy to work with, responds well to planning and moulding and can be either screwed or nailed. The smooth texture and straight, fine-lined grain make Hemlock the perfect substrate for coatings, while the natural light blonde colour offers an attractive finish when left raw. More suited for internal use.
SHOU SUGI BAN
Shou Sugi Ban 焼杉板 (or Yaki-sugi) is an ancient Japanese process for treating timber to preserve the wood. The wood is carefully charred with fire after which it goes through a brushing and treatment process, giving it a unique, dark appearance.
